Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the €3/item EU customs duty reform?+
The EU is abolishing the current €150 de minimis threshold exemption from customs duties. From July 1, 2026, all goods shipped from outside the EU (regardless of value) will attract a flat €3 per item customs duty. This affects billions of parcels annually and ends the duty-free advantage that non-EU sellers currently enjoy.
Does the €3 duty apply even if my order is under €150?+
Yes. The current €150 de minimis exemption is being abolished. From July 2026, the €3 flat duty applies to all inbound parcels from non-EU countries — whether the order is €5 or €500. This is the fundamental change.
Does IOSS registration eliminate the €3 duty?+
No — IOSS registration does not eliminate the €3 duty. You still owe it. However, IOSS registration changes how it's collected: with IOSS, the duty is processed more efficiently through the customs system, you avoid carrier handling surcharges (€10–20/parcel), and customers don't receive surprise charges at the door — which reduces refusals by 15–25%.
Is the €3 per item or per parcel?+
Per item. A parcel containing 3 items incurs €9 in duty. This makes high-volume, low-value item categories (accessories, beauty, fashion) disproportionately affected compared to single high-value item orders.
Can I pass the €3 duty on to customers?+
You can, but it reduces conversion. The optimal approach is to show the all-inclusive landed cost at checkout (with IOSS handling the mechanics). Merchants who absorb the duty see better conversion but compressed margins — which is why early planning matters. Our calculator shows you the exact price increase needed to maintain your current margin.
What's the deadline to get IOSS registered before July 2026?+
IOSS registration typically takes 4–8 weeks once you appoint an EU intermediary. With the reform starting July 1, 2026, you should begin the process by May 2026 at the latest. If you're not registered by July 1, your customers will face carrier-collected duties with handling fees — causing refusals and negative brand impact.
